High Wave Potential in Several Indonesian Periods, This is BMKG Appeal

PONTIANAK – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges the public to be vigilant about the potential for waves as high as * 1.25 to 4 meters * which has the potential to occur in a number of Indonesian waters in the coming days * (29 – 31 July 2019). *

According to BMKG, there is a wind pattern in the north of the equator generally from Southeast – Southwest with a speed of 4-20 knots, whereas in the south the equator is generally from East – South with a speed of 4 – 25 knots. The highest wind speeds are observed in the southern waters of Banten to West Java and the southern Makassar Strait. This condition resulted in an increase in wave height around the area.

From the results of BMKG monitoring, a number of waters areas in Indonesia that are likely to occur with high waves are * North Sabang Waters, South Waters Kep. Banggai – Sula, West Waters of Aceh, South Waters of Buru – Seram Island, West Waters of Simeulue Island – Kep. Mentawai, Banda Sea, Bengkulu Waters, East Seram Sea, West Indian Ocean Aceh – Nias, Kep. Letti – Kep. Tanimbar, Southern Waters of Sumba Island – Sumba Island, Kep Islands. Kei – Kep. Aru, South Waters P. Sawu – Sawu Sea, Kep. Sangihe – Talaud, Kupang Selatan – P. Rote Waters, South Sulawesi North Waters, Sawu Sea and South Timor NTT Sea, Bitung Waters – Kep. Sitaro, Natuna Sea – Karimata Strait, Halmahera Waters, Java Sea – South Kalimantan Waters, Maluku Sea and Halmahera Sea, south and central Makassar Strait, Sorong Waters – Rajaampat, southern Bone Bay, South waters of Kaimana – Amamapere, East Sea Islands . Wakatobi, Arafuru Sea, Manui Waters – Kendari, North Pacific Ocean Halmahera – West Papua * with height * 1.25 to 2.5 meters.

Meanwhile, waves as high as * 2.5 to 4 meters * also have potential in some Indonesian waters. These areas include * Enggano waters, South Banten waters – West Java, West Lampung waters, South Bali waters – Lombok, West Indian Ocean Kep. Mentawai – West Lampung, Bali Strait – southern Lombok, South Sunda Strait, South Indian Ocean Java – NTB. *

High wave potential in a number of these areas could pose a risk to shipping safety. To that end, BMKG always appealed to people who live or move on the coast, especially fishermen who use boats to be aware of wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 m, * barges * with wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave height at above 1.5 m, * ferry * with wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave height above 2.5 m, Large Size Vessels such as * Cargo / cruise ships * with wind speeds of more than 12 knots and wave height above 4.0 m to always alert.
