Sail and Power of December / January is on newsstands

I would first like to thank Sail and Power for the opportunity to write the last editorial of 2019, a year in which sustainability-related issues seems to have come to the general public who, with his choices, is certainly the greatest stimulus for change in industrial processes, for research of new materials and new products of lesser impact and circular economy based.

It was only in October of 2017 when the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, of which I have the honor of Commodore for eleven years, has organized for its 50th Anniversary Forum One Ocean, the first in Italy on issues related to sustainability and protection of the sea. Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Chairman of our Board of Directors, he had indicated the high road for the future: to make our contribution to the protection of the sea, so that gave us in the past and now he needs our help. It is not about “keeping the house clean where you live”, but much more: scientists have understood that the health of the oceans depends the very survival of the planet as we live in today. It must be protected at all costs, because we are close to the point of no return. The Forum ended with the signing of the Charta Smeralda, our code of ethics to share principles and actions for the protection of the seas, is drawn to sensitize public opinion to the experts, highlighting the sense of urgency in addressing the problems the most pressing of the oceans and marine and coastal ecosystems.

It was precisely the scientific approach of the Forum One Ocean and its success beyond all expectations to give us the incentive to continue, resulting in March 2018 at One Ocean Foundation. Looking at what has been done, it seems that only two years have elapsed scarce, but much more, thanks to the help of all: the signatories of the Charta Smeralda yacht club to our Ambassador, including sailors Pelaschier Mauro and Paul Cayard the diver and explorer David Carrera Alex Bellini, to all lovers of the sea, from our partner companies without whose financial support nothing would have been possible, the scientific Committee of the Foundation and to the media that have spread our voice together with others that are fighting for the same purpose. They all contributed useful actions, the individual citizen in small daily actions of greater prominence to other initiatives such as the Tour of Italy sailing Mauro Pelaschier accomplished last year, disclosing the urgent need to change course, witnessing the state pollution, in particular from plastic, each of the twelve steps, then continue during the winter at the schools, because they are young, discerning and willing to change in order to save their future.

The 2019 ended with another important element, the first project of Business for Ocean Sustainability Research, in collaboration with SDA Bocconi, McKinsey & Company and CSIC (The Spanish National Research Council), recently unveiled and available for everyone, companies, associations and individuals, on the website of the Foundation: This report, based on an extensive research and data analysis, which involved more than 200 companies, examines how to unleash the potential of marine and coastal ecosystems by creating new business opportunities in a sustainable way. In particular, attention is given to awareness, strategies and innovative practices adopted by companies, highlighting the contribution of innovation, both technological and organizational sustainability. This first edition is focused on the Mediterranean, but continue studies, as well as other actions.

The activity of the One Ocean Foundation wants to be the legacy for future generations by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and my personal.

Riccardo Bonadeo

YCCS Commodore and Vice President of One Ocean Foundation
