FIV Sailor of the Year 2019 – XXVI edition – online awards

Rome, 23 May 2020: after the first phase of a pandemic lasts, the organization of the event decided to take the plunge and make official the winners of the Year 2019. The FIV Velista contingent situation does not allow that the holding of the traditional ceremony convivial. As a result the event will be streamed and broadcast on social channels of the Italian Sailing Federation, the Facebook page of The Sailor of the Year and FIV partner magazines, substantially following the traditional ladder. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 28 at 18.15. Alberto Acciari, founder and organizer of the Prize, together with the President of the Italian Sailing Federation will be invited by the President Giovanni Malago in Rome at the CONI representative office from where he will be live streaming.


The Sailor of the Year is conceived and organized by Acciari Consulting, starring the Italian Sailing Federation as an institutional partner and the sponsorship and support of Confindustria Nautica and that of Mercedes-Benz Vans as technical partner.

The finalists of the FIV Sailor of the Year award are: Ambrose Beccaria, Vittorio Bissaro and Maelle Frascari, Marco Gradoni, Mauro Pelaschier, Giulio Calabro and Giacomo Ferrari all athletes who have distinguished themselves in the course of 2019 at the international level with absolute results.

During the evening will be awarded: the trophy Owner / Helmsman year – Mercedes-Benz Van Award for whom are vying Gianrocco Catalan, Roberto and Alessandro Lacorte Rombelli and Boat of the Year Award – Confindustria Nautica Trophy, for which the three finalists are boats: Elan 400 Andromeda, Luna Rossa AC 75 Luna Rossa Prada Team Pirelli and TP52 Xio.

As usual during the evening, the Italian Sailing Federation will award the athletes and technicians of the Olympic classes who have achieved results of international importance in the course of 2019.

The jury of the award, composed of the President of IVF Francis Hector, by the Secretary General of CONI Carlo Mornati, the President of the industry Boats Sailing Confindustra Nautica, Fabio Planamente and Alberto Acciari, organizer and secretary of the Prize, will decide the winners, after Acknowledging the results of online voting by the public.

The media partners media partners who work alongside the Sailor of the Year IVF are: Telesia (Group Class Editori), which for the sixth consecutive year the event will transmit the images via their digital TV channels of Italian and metropolitan airports. Among the media partners we are also the most important trade publications: Bolina, Be Sailing, Boating, Boating Report, Pressmare,,, Sail and Power, and VelaItalia Zerogradinord.

Ambrose Beccaria

Ambrose Beccaria, the Milanese born 1991, engineer nautical, sailing since he is 15 years old. In 2019 did not err aboard his Mini 6.50 GEOMAG: the results speak it for him. A series of first places in the Pornichet Select solitary and Trophy MAP, then the one at the Mini Fastnet with Alberto Riva. Finally, Beccaria wins with authority the Mini Transat (in French transatlantic mythical standard category) from Las Palmas to Martinique, having also won the first leg from La Rochelle in France to Las Palmas, for a total of more than 4050 miles solo. Beccaria was the first Italian ever to get such a prestigious award.

Vittorio Bissaro and Maelle Frascari

Vittorio Bissaro (Golden Flame), Verona, aerospace and aeronautical engineer has to his credit a fifth place at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 in the Nacra 17 class paired with Silvia Sicouri bow. Since 2017 its bow is Maelle Frascari (CC Aniene), Roman, philosophy graduate who hails from regattas in windsurfing and Laser Radial. Bissaro and Frascari graduated World champions Nacra 17 class in Auckland, New Zealand, thus ending a season full of results, despite having had to handle the injury occurred a few months ago at the forward foot in training. Returning now to the top, they have confirmed the tricolor world leader in the Nacra 17 class, after the success of last year Tita- Banti. For the world title conquered, Vittorio Bissaro and Maelle Frascari have been awarded the Golden Collar 2019 Sporting Merit during the award ceremony which was held at the CONI last December.

Marco Gradoni

Marco 15 years, Roman (athlete Tognazzi Village ASD) boasts three consecutive world titles in the Optimist class (2017, 2018, 2019), absolute record in the history of the class. In his list there are 14 gold medals won in other international competitions. Last November Gradoni has received the most prestigious award in world sailing, Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award in 2019.

Mauro Pelaschier

Mauro Pelaschier born in 1949, Monfalcone, began his career as a sailor with a number of Italian titles in the Finn class from 1964 to 1977 up to participate in the 1983 and 1987 America’s Cup as helmsman of Azzurra. So many years his achievements in the international arena, the last in order of time those of 2019: the ORC World Championship in Sibenik in Croatia aboard the Xp44 Wb Five and the championship of the world 12M S.I. Newport R.I. (USA) of Nyala, treating yourself well for his 70 years two titles. In December 2019 he was awarded by the President of the Republic the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for “its authoritative contribution to the respect and protection of marine ecosystems.”

Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabro

Giulio Calabro and Giacomo Ferrari both born in 1996 under the sports athletes of the Navy, in 2019 won the world title in the junior class 470M in Port Roses (Slovenia). The young pair of sailors from Lazio, which boasts an exceptional coach like Gabrio Zandonà, again in 2019 won the Italian title in Gargnano 470, third place at the Portugal Grand Prix in Vilamoura, and was sixth at the absolute class World Championship 470M to Enoshima in Japan.

Luna Rossa AC 75

Pisano 51, 2019 aboard his SuperNikka winning for the fourth time the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in the category Minimaxi in five years.

Alessandro Rombelli

Award-winning helmsman – master edition 2017, in 2019 aboard his Melges 20 STIG won the world title class in Miami (USA).
